Admission notes

A subscription brand buried under JavaScript bloat and product duplication

BARK ships curated dog products to millions of subscribers. Their Shopify storefront had thousands of SKUs, but Google couldn’t efficiently crawl or rank the pages that mattered most.

The situation

  • D2C subscription brand with massive product catalog across BarkBox, Super Chewer, and BARK Air
  • Thousands of product and variant pages competing for the same keywords
  • High-intent pet owners searching for breed-specific, size-specific, and product-specific queries
  • Every product category a separate search opportunity, largely uncaptured

What stood in the way

  • Heavy JavaScript bloat from Shopify apps and third-party scripts blocking render
  • Product page duplication across thousands of SKU variants
  • Thin category pages with minimal unique content
  • Core Web Vitals failing across mobile and desktop

The unglamorous part

The problems that don’t fit in a pitch deck

Most of this engagement was infrastructure nobody sees. It’s also the reason the rest worked.

Shopify app bloat

Dozens of third-party apps injected scripts that blocked render and blew out main-thread time on every page load.

Product page duplication

Thousands of SKU variants created near-duplicate pages, diluting crawl budget and confusing ranking signals.

Thin category content

Category pages were product grids with no unique copy, giving Google nothing to index or rank for.

Core Web Vitals failing

CLS from layout shifts, LCP from unoptimised images, and INP from heavy script bundles.

Third-party script conflicts

Subscription tools, analytics, and chat widgets loaded synchronously, competing for the main thread.

Crawl budget waste

Googlebot spent its budget on variant pages instead of high-value category and product pages.
