Admission notes

A creative studio with stunning work - and a site that hid it

Blooms Art produces bespoke murals, installations and branded art pieces for commercial and residential clients across the UK. Their portfolio deserved better than a slow, cluttered gallery page.

The situation

  • UK-based art and design studio specialising in murals, installations and commissions
  • Growing demand from commercial clients - hotels, restaurants, offices
  • Portfolio buried in unoptimised image grids with no filtering or storytelling
  • Incoming enquiries relied almost entirely on word of mouth

What stood in the way

  • Massive unoptimised images loading sequentially - LCP over 8 seconds
  • No structured service pages - clients couldn't tell what was offered
  • Generic WordPress theme with no conversion-focused design
  • Absence of meta descriptions and alt text across all portfolio pages
  • No lead capture mechanism beyond a buried email address

Scope

14 interventions, four workstreams

Documented in full in the Blooms Art growth & performance report.

  • Meta descriptions for all pages
  • Internal linking between portfolio and service pages

Core Web Vitals

The vitals, before and now

Google's threshold for a good LCP is 2.5 seconds. The portfolio gallery was over three times that.

Read this carefully

The 8.3s baseline is a Lighthouse lab test of the portfolio gallery. The 1.1s is field data across the site. A like-for-like re-test of the gallery page would confirm the improvement end-to-end.

Still on the list

Third-party embed scripts for Instagram feeds (~220ms), 12KiB unused CSS from the old theme, and a deferred booking widget that blocks the main thread during peak traffic.

The unglamorous part

The problems that don't fit in a pitch deck

Most of this engagement was invisible infrastructure work. It's also the reason the rest worked.

Portfolio images were 4-8 MB each

Raw PSD exports uploaded directly to WordPress. No compression, no WebP, no responsive sizing.

Theme injected 380ms of render-blocking CSS

Legacy stylesheet loaded synchronously with no critical CSS extraction.

No lead capture anywhere

The only contact method was an email address buried in the footer - no forms, no CTAs.

Zero SEO metadata across the site

No meta descriptions, no alt text, no schema. Google was guessing at every page.

Slow WordPress admin panel

Gallery management took longer than creating the art. Editor workflows were painful.

Mobile experience was broken

Portfolio grid didn't reflow - users had to pinch and zoom through every project.
