Admission notes

A brand agency with a website that did not sell its own brand

Maro designs brands for clients across Malaysia. The irony was that its own website was slow, generic, and invisible to the local searches that mattered most.

The situation

  • Established brand design agency in Kuala Lumpur
  • Strong portfolio but weak online presence
  • Competing against agencies with louder digital footprints
  • High-intent local searches ("brand agency KL") not being captured

What stood in the way

  • Portfolio-heavy site with minimal service copy and no clear CTAs
  • PageSpeed score at 31 on mobile - visitors bounced before images loaded
  • No Google Business Profile optimisation
  • Service pages thin, with under 200 words each
  • No lead capture mechanism beyond a basic contact form

Scope

14 interventions, four workstreams

Documented in full in the Maro growth report.

Web Redesign

  • Full homepage and service page rebuild
  • Portfolio section with lazy-loaded project galleries
  • Responsive redesign for mobile-first browsing
  • Performance-first image pipeline (WebP, responsive sizes)
  • New brand guidelines applied across all pages

Lead Generation

  • Multi-step inquiry form replacing single contact form
  • Service-specific landing pages with pricing cues
  • Exit-intent popup for first-time visitors
  • WhatsApp chat widget for instant engagement
  • Thank-you page with portfolio showcase

Local SEO

  • Google Business Profile overhaul - photos, posts, Q&A
  • "Brand agency Kuala Lumpur" and 24 local keywords targeted
  • NAP consistency across 12 directories
  • Local schema markup - LocalBusiness, AggregateRating
  • Monthly Google Business Profile post schedule

Brand Strategy

  • Brand messaging framework - voice, tone, positioning
  • Case study templates for portfolio storytelling
  • Service page copy rewritten around client outcomes
  • Meta descriptions and title tags across all pages
  • Competitor positioning analysis

Before & after · the pages

What changed, page by page

These are the live Maro pages as they were, and as we rebuilt them. Screenshots come straight from the client performance report.

01

Homepage

A portfolio-first layout with no clear path to enquiry.

  • Full-screen portfolio carousel with no text above the fold
  • No headline, no value proposition, no CTA
  • Service links buried in the footer
  • PageSpeed score: 31 on mobile
After
Maro homepage after the redesign
  • Hero with headline, subtext and prominent enquiry CTA
  • Service highlights as a scannable icon grid
  • Featured work with category filters
  • PageSpeed score: 92 on mobile
02

Service Pages

Thin content with no persuasion or social proof.

Before
  • Under 200 words per service page
  • No process explanation or timeline
  • No case studies or testimonials
  • Generic "Contact us" link at the bottom
  • Meta title was just "Services - Maro"
After
  • 800-1,200 words per service page with client-outcome framing
  • Process timeline: Discovery → Strategy → Design → Delivery
  • Embedded case study cards per service
  • Mid-page and bottom CTA with pricing indication
  • SEO-optimised meta titles and descriptions
03

Contact & Enquiry

A single-field form that filtered nobody.

Before
  • Single textarea with name and email
  • No service selection or budget indication
  • No response time expectation set
  • 42% form abandonment rate
After
  • Multi-step form: service → budget range → project details
  • WhatsApp widget for instant conversation
  • Response time badge: "We reply within 4 business hours"
  • Form abandonment fell to 18%

Core Web Vitals

The vitals, before and now

Google's threshold for a good LCP is 2.5 seconds. The Maro homepage was more than double it.

Read this carefully

The 6.4s baseline is a Lighthouse lab test of the homepage. The 1.2s is field data. A like-for-like lab re-test would close the loop but field data reflects what real users experience.

Still on the list

Portfolio gallery pages still load heavy image sets. Server-side rendering for project pages would cut LCP further. Breadcrumb schema pending on inner pages.

The fix list

Ten issues, each with a documented fix

Not recommendations - the actual changes specified, page by page, with the homepage as the reference implementation.

Issue foundWhat we changed
LCP at 6.4sPreloaded hero image, converted background to <img>, inlined critical CSS
Render-blocking CSSExtracted critical CSS, deferred non-critical stylesheets
Unoptimised imagesConverted to WebP, added responsive srcset and sizes
No lazy loadingAdded loading="lazy" to all below-fold images
CLS at 0.32Set explicit width and height on all images and embeds
Thin service pagesExpanded to 800-1,200 words with client-outcome framing
No lead captureBuilt multi-step inquiry form with service and budget selection
Weak local SEOGBP overhaul, NAP consistency, LocalBusiness schema
No meta strategyRewrote title tags and meta descriptions for all pages
Missing alt textAdded descriptive alt text to every portfolio and service image

The unglamorous part

The problems that do not fit in a pitch deck

Most of this engagement was infrastructure nobody sees. It is also the reason the rest worked.

Unoptimised portfolio images

Client work uploaded as 4MB TIFFs. Built an automated pipeline to convert, resize and compress to WebP on upload.

Inconsistent brand messaging

Different pages described the same service in different ways. Created a unified messaging framework applied site-wide.

Malaysia hosting latency

Server was in Europe. Migrated to a Malaysia-based CDN node, cutting TTFB by 340ms.

No analytics foundation

GA4 was installed but no events were configured. Built a full event taxonomy from scratch.

Competitor keyword overlap

Three competitor agencies dominated the same SERPs. Differentiated through long-tail service + location combinations.

Mobile layout breakage

Portfolio gallery overflows on screens under 400px. Fixed with CSS grid and swipe-friendly layouts.
